Sustenance X; Our Pillar of Support, the Source of Strength

"If your world were to end tomorrow and today would be your last day, will you be satisfied with your life?"

That's something I'd often ask myself at least weekly to keep myself in check mentally. There goes a saying that one should "live everyday to the fullest" and that's what I abide to personally, everyday if possible.

Everyday either during my bus ride home or when I'm in the shower, I'll think about my day; what can I improve on and if I'm satisfied with my day's work.

Though it may seem morbid, I'd like to think what would happen if the world stopped tomorrow. What if I died tomorrow? Would there be a smile on my face as I part? Or will I regret in agony and wished that time could be turned backwards?

Of course, I'd hope that it was the previous but more often then not, I find myself in regret and despair and more so, fearful of that day. The day when that "tomorrow" really arrived.

We as Humans live by our own philosophies, and our own believes. Religion dictates and orientates these thoughts and the way of life but what about those without a direction in religion?

For myself, I believe in my own ideas, philosophies and perspective. To some, it may seem ignorant not to get involved in religion but I feel that everyone has his or her own right to decide what is right and wrong. I might get involved in religion but don't see myself doing so in quite some time.

Comparatively, I adhere strictly to my personal belief. I foster high expectations and hopes for myself, even above the threshold of what others expect from me.

This is due to my persistent belief that when one fails, the person that you're going to let down most isn't your parents nor your educators but yourself.

When one fails, no other person will feel just about what you're feeling, especially if prior to the attempt, a high standard has been set by your very own sub conscious mind; it makes falling all the way down to the bottom much much harder to deal with.

Failure constitutes to dissatisfaction which leads to the mentality of pessimistic views (refer to previous post on Satisfaction) which trust me, will cloud your day and make it seem terrible.

Personally I dread days like these. Partly because of the pressure and partly because it'll be in infringement on my personal belief; I would not be satisfied if the day was my last.

Regret, for instance is a terrible "device" fabricated that will literally, ruin your life, make no mistake about it. There is nothing worse then to live your life in regret.

Though personally, I may not have experience massive regret, I have read books that articulate the point clearly, some even going to the extend of describing regret as a "curse" that'll haunt continuously.

Won't that be terrible? To live everyday of your life in agony till your last? I'm sure no one will want that to happen to them.

There has to be a way in the design to counteract symptoms of dread as such.

Is there?

There is no definite solution to a problem as such due to its diversity and subjective nature; everyone has different problems in their lives.

But there is this one general idea which I term "Sustenance X" which I'm sure everyone has in them. Whether they know of it, however, is another completely different matter.

So what is this "Sustenance X"?

The word "subjective" is self explanatory. Sustenance X can be anything, anything to a person that will give them that little bit of push and strength to go on when the world is seemingly at its darkest and when all seems to fail.

I'm sure its not wrong to say that Sustenance X exists in all of us as without it, we as humans will not be able to survive any emotional or mental breakdown.

For me personally, My Sustenance X is not only the people around me (my friends and importantly, family) but also, my personal belief and motivation. To me, this is extremely important as what drives me (my motivation) is fueled on the base of my personal beliefs.

I believe to succeed, I believe not to fail and I believe to give my all in everything I attempt, no matter the situation. More importantly, I believe in not looking back at your day and regretting as to me, that's the worse feeling one can ever get; a feeling that you're helpless.

My Sustenance X drives to me to the objectives I personally set for myself and it plays a vital role for without Sustenance X, I would have lost the drive to succeed in life, which effectively renders it useless.

That would be tragic indeed as one losing his or her drive in life often results in the less then ideal end. It is no surprise that in the world we're living in today, many people lack a galvanized Sustenance X in their mentality for the taxing society erodes away the mental resistance we as humans develop.

Stress is one thing but the drive and motivation to do well is another. The stress factor plays contrary to the drive of the person partly due to discouragement which really pierces the mental defence of people.

So how do we build up this defence? How do we further define Sustenance X?

First off, I feel that goal setting is really important in one's aspect as it interlinks with the core component of the defence; Motivation. This cannot be stressed enough as with a strong motivation, the drive to do well and succeed will be evident.

Opening up about one's problems will also help greatly as the people around you influence the way you think the most. Rely on your family especially, as they're the ones who'll stand by you no matter what and they'll never give up hope which I think is a strong link of importance.

Positive values are also a good way to strengthen the willpower of a person. Even more so if the person himself, beliefs in them.

Thus everytime I review my day be it in the shower, during my bus ride home or right before I go to bed, I'll think of my dissatisfactions in a different light.

Yes though I may still have a certain degree of regret if my day doesn't turn out well but instead of mauling over it, I'll see what can I do to IMPROVE the outcome and to avoid a similar experience.

My goal to live each day to the fullest, in this way, will not be compromised and when the day really comes, I'll have no regrets.

So ask ourselves that if today was the last day of our lives, would we be satisfied?

Let us work towards finding and strengthening our "Sustenance X" and only then will we be a more complete person as a whole.

Poem; And I'll Look Death in the Eye and Sigh.

Okay, this is just some random poem that pop-ed into my head just a couple of minutes ago. Not that I'm feeling emotional (fine, just a little) or anything, just an inspiration that came to me.

So here goes...

And I'll Look Death in the Eye and Sigh.

Life isn't as peaceful
as you've thought it out to be.
the up and down contours,
sets a precedent in our minds.

When we're down and out
take a step back and listen
to the sounds of the heart
which holds no reason.

Yes, the heart falters
but should we?
will we soldier on,
in search of the light?

Affairs of the heart
an incomparable truth
for us as mere mortals
this is only a bruise.

Complications arise
but that is the nature
for this cruel game of life,
is full of obstacles as such.

When the time comes
and problems arise
feelings crushed
hurt and betrayed.

What do we do?
scars of battle,
gashes of blood,
and wounds of the heart.

What do we do?
left out in the open
vulnerable and cold
till of age too old.

What do we do?
the mental agony,
torment and torture
is it all in our minds?

This pain is real
both inside and out
for the scars won't heal
nor will they fade.

All that drama,
the cruel truth
is this needed?
why have people become as thus?

The life that I've been
full of forceful regrets
nevertheless I've lived
throughout all those defects.

This is life as such
for one like myself
few will understand
few will comprehend.

This is life as such
for one like myself
no one knows
no one feels.

Living under a rock
for insecurities exist
those who may mock
it doesn't matter at least

And thus when the time comes
when the crows cry
the lakes empty
and when heavens dry

I'll know that the time
has indeed come
for me to take my leave
from this place of harm.

Until then,
when I see its face
whatever it is
with its horrible grimace

At that point in time
my tears will dry
when everything will stop...

I'll look Death in the eye

and Sigh.

Quiz Time. (well not really)

(A request from http://afrotoast.blogspot.com/)

Okay, just to make this clear, I have no idea whatsoever about this quiz so I'm just gonna answer the questions as they are. Here goes.

#1 If your lover betrayed you, what will your reaction be?
uhhh... okayyyyy... eat her guts maybe?

#2 If you can have a dream to come true, what would it be?
to be rich and... oh come on, I WANNA BE A JUMPER. (lol)

#3 What will your dream wedding be like?
A snowy setting would be nice.

#4 Are you hungry?
Well, it depends. hungry for?

#5 What's your ideal lover like?
like duh. oh you know, the usual.

#6 Which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone?
(incoming WALL OF TEXT) Well its subjective really. From a certain viewpoint, both loving someone and being loved will incur a certain degree of similarity in terms of which one being more blessed. The word love, I feel, is too strong to be used in this context as mainly due to the fact that love works both ways. I feel that its impossible to love one-sided due to relative reasons. *drone drone drone*... (zomg potential article)

#7 What was the last song you listened to?
lets see... Face Down by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus I guess.

#8 If the person you secretly like is already attached, what would you do?
hmmm... Dig out my heart with a knife look at it and put it right back in. (lol random but think of it metaphorically)

#9 Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days?
well... yes. Aside from the fact that I'm ill, other events that I'm not at pleasure to disclose.

#11 Is being attached fun?
"Fun" sounds wrong...

#12 How do you see yourself in ten years time?
making big bucks off a media company, hopefully not locally and probably a record deal for the FFD and polly a producer.

#13 Who are currently the most important people to you?
My Family and Friends. (no, seriously)

#14 What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?
Someone who would save up Lunch money just to buy games.

#15 Would you rather be single & rich or married but poor?
subjective to whom I'm married to. If its someone I appreciate, nothing else matters.

#16 What's the first thing you do every morning?
Turn off the Alarm.

#17 Would you give all in a relationship?
Depends on the other party

#18 If you fall in love with two people simultaneously, who would you pick?
uh how would I know.

#19 What are your friends usually like?
STARBUCKS (lifted)

#20 What type of friends do you dislike?
I try to socialise with everyone but generally those who don't know their limits.

There, done. What's up with all the weird questions about love anyway. Oh well. Time to get ready for a little work. Will update soon.

Cya'll later.

Satisfaction; the Delighted Mother and the Inquisitive Child

My daily bus rides to school are usually filled with a compliment of music from my handphone (through my earphones of course) and the usual reading of my notes.

A couple of days back however, during my usual bus ride to school, something interesting happened and though it may seem like a really normal event, something inside me made ponder about the simplicity and the things that life can bring to us.

Basically what happened was...

As the bus reared around the corner of Anderson Primary school and towards the MRT station's bus stop, the duo who were sitting right in front of me fumbled for the bell button, to signal for the bus to stop.

The little boy, about 3 years of age, eagerly reached for the button while his mother carried him, preventing his fall. A bell tolled near the front of the bus, almost instantly soon after, signalling that the bus will stop at the next station.

I observed the boy's expression with great interest; he was smiling, evidently delighted. Following that, caught a glimpse of his mother's expression; nothing less then what I saw on the boy's facial expression. I saw something that many people nowadays overlook in their daily lives.

I've not observed things like this in a long time. These are little details that we often miss out in our daily lives and sometimes, its good and ideal to take a step back and just relax while observing the various human expressions and behaviour.

But just what was it that I saw?

Satisfaction.

Many a time, our lives are hectic and filled with worldly committments (refer to my previous posts for an elaboration). So much as to contributes to our ignorance, for minor but meaningful observations as such.

However, do not mistake my intentions, for I'm not saying that a life without committments is a good one; a balanced blend of the both is much needed.

So what is Satisfaction?

"The fulfillment or gratification of a desire, need, or appetite" (as cited from dictionary.com)? Well, in a theorical way, I guess that'll float the boat. But I like to think that Satisfication is a state whereby one achieves a desired outcome out of a certain action.

At around 5:45AM on Thursday morning, Manchester United won the Champions League (refer to my earlier post, once again). Yes, I watched the match but what I was looking forward to was the celebrations at the end of the game (and of course to see United win).

To me, the pinnacle of satisfaction comes when you've put in an immerse amount of effort into a particular action or endeavour. As such in United's case, I'm really sure that they put in their due effort just to achieve their due reward; a double of titles (BPL and Champions League titles).

The scale of satisfaction however, holds no boundaries. I personally feel that satisfaction is a set quantity; it depends on how the individual views the subject matter.

What this means is that the satisfaction of winning the Champions League (for example), is comparable to say, overcoming a phobia for instance. This is subjective though as not everyone might feel this way. Commonly, the amount or rather, level of satisfaction one gets from a particular action depends on the amount of effort (as mentioned).

To me however, cleaning up my room or even helping our in the dishes wields the same amount of satisfaction as to say, finishing up my assignments. Weird but true.

We must not underestimate the value of satisfaction. Strange as it may sound, this is evident in the world we're living in, especially due to the high demands that the society has on us; we are never satisfied totally.

In a way, this is a good thing as it spurs us on to greater heights and to perform pass our benchmark. But when the time comes to reap our rewards, we should go all out and not dwell on our weaknesses.

Satisfaction can act as a motivation. A motivation to do better, a motivation to improve. In that sense, satisfaction is Powerful.

When one is satisfied with something, we should strive to do better and achieve the same level of satisfaction or better for the future projects. In doing so, working it to our advantage.

So lets open up our social filters and view the world with an open eye. Only then will we find our drive and motivation to achieve greater things.

Friday night+Friends= Awesome-ness

Friday Night. Starbucks. Awesome.

These are the various aspects in which contributes to my destressing activities for the past week due to the taxing demands of poly life. In this article I'll talk about the... Oh wait, an article?

Yea right...

Let see, Starbucks last night (Friday) was awesome. Like really really awesome, period. Friday nights ever fail to perk a stressful week up.

First it was the Subway Sandwich I had IN Starbucks and the Coffee Frap which went really really well with the Subway Club (foot-long). Then it was the conversations we had and after that, a random photoshoot on one of my friend's Macbook. It was really rad.

Oh well. Thats all for the update I guess. Heading out into the wild concrete jungle soon; loads to complete. Will try and update soon. And oh yea, before I forget, a couple of pictures from last night. lol.

There are a couple more but I'm kinda lazy to upload them. Look, blame the workload yea?

Differentiation; Not Your Average Math Question.

(A response to http://afrotoast.blogspot.com/, check it out)

As mentioned, this article is dedicated to a request from afrotoast, a friend of mine.

Since I had nothing else but (school) work on my mind these few days (refer to the previous post for details), I'll conjure an article up within 30 minutes or so.

Incoming Wall of text; you have been warned.

Our society has it in such a way that when an individual is adversely different in a certain way or manner, other people will tend to look at him or her differently. This is what we call a generalisation or the more commonly used term, stereotyping.

"A simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group" (as cited from dictionary.com) defines the term "stereotype".

But what does stereotyping got to do with being different in the society?

As mentioned earlier, the act of stereotyping or generalisation is very often used when someone tries to stand out in a crowd. Obviously, this is very situational in a sense that you doing something perfectly normal in a set group may seem like taboo in another group.

Stereotyping is used to treat people acting differently in a group due to the fact that we as humans have this "oh that person is so different from the rest of us, so he must be a weird-do thus lets stay away from him" mentality. You can't say that you've never ever encountered a situation like that ever before haven't you?

This is harsh but its evident and happening in our world as we speak. Its due to this type of stereotyping that actually discourages creativity and discourages people to go "beyond their limits".

What is it with our modern society that condemns such individuals with stereotypical equations? Is it wrong to afterall, be different?

I personally believe that everyone, and I really mean everyone, at some point in their lives, will develop an urge to be different in a way or another; superficially or otherwise. This is largely due to the fact that when you're in a group, you want to stand out from the mass of other people and thus the only way to stand out is to portray yourself differently.

Notice that this can work both ways; positively and negatively.

The effects of both ways elaborated are rather straightforward as standing out from the crowd would either mean you're exceptionally good versus the person that gets left out or gets picked the last at football games.

But should people let the society dictate the way their lives should be led and lived?

I think not.

I'm sure I've mentioned in my previous blog entries that it is always good to "get out of your comfort zones" and "go over your personal limit" as it often reaps unexpected results, so as long as one doesn't overdo it. When you live in a society and are part of it, it is very much likely that you as an individual will get influence at how the way things work throughout the society and naturally, you'll not even think about distinguishing yourself as peer pressure is an element and you're not comfortable to being treated differently.

But lets face it realistically, who likes being treated differently? I'm sure and assume that everyone wants to be treated as an equal in society and nothing less and to be totally honest, I'm not even sure myself if I can personally withstand being treated as a lesser in society; its not that simple and easy to get by.

This is also the reason why racism is such a controversial topic in the world as it talks about the different in skin colour and the inequality faced. I'll not go into explicit detail due to the controversy (as mentioned) but i feel that people shouldn't be judged based on their skin colour and race; its just not fair.

Coming back on topic, certain aspects of being different from the masses are critical in understanding human behaviour and actions (some of which I've already elaborated on).

In a way, we say everyone is different. That claim holds a certain degree of truth as yes, we are very different living beings individually due to a number of aspects, like the way we think for instance, but what if the way people think about a certain subject is altered by the way the society is structured and worked? Aren't we all the same and back to square one?

No, I have my own belief that everyone is different in their own special way no matter how much influence and grip the society has on them. In a sense, every living organism on the planet is different; even twins share distinct differences, be it mentally or physically.

Being different doesn't always have to be an outright action or having a distinct personality so as long as we believe that we're all unique.

So the next time you feel left out and ostracized in a group remember that you're afterall, you and no one will be able to replace that no matter how different or similar you are as compared to the rest of the group.

And thus, the next time you smile at a stranger and the person looks at you funny, think not of it as a social faux pas, but as a step towards a different and more enriching life.

Random Thought.

Blogging from the school's library. Freaking hectic week, period. And just to visualise that point, take a look at this,

As you can see, thats my organizer (classified as "highly confidential").

Each column represents a particular day of the week. The lines represent different time slots of the day in 30 minute intervals.

So lets say, if I have a meeting for 0621 ICA1 on Friday at 3pm, I'll write something like "0621 ICA1 meeting (S)" at the 3pm slot and "0621 ICA1 meeting (E)" at around 5pm; its that simple.

But not so, if you think about it. Yes, it keeps my life in check BUT it also makes me busy, or at least thats how I feel now. I mean if you look at the organizer and see totally NO free slots at all, how free can you be?

Anyway, back on topic. Its time for a couple of random thoughts. In no particular order whatsoever.

1) A friend wants me to write an article about a topic from his Blog.

2) I have to do an interview later.

3) My phone is cracked.

4) There is wind.

5) Canon in D is a nice song.

6) I like Slash. (as in I respect his skill, lol)

7) Fish ball noodle soup should taste nice when mixed with coke.

8) I have Headphones.

9) Don't touch my organizer.

10) Imagine this, a lecturer walks up to you, he teaches you say, Media Marketing for example. He walks up to you and smiles at you. What do you do? (pause) Suddenly he reaches for his face and pulls, in doing so, taking off his mask. To your horror, its actually your Dad in disguise. What do you do? (pause)

11)

(random picture I found in my cell and yes, its pretty neat)

Oh well. Bloody random-ness (sp). Think I'm running on 35% battery life or something; feeling freaking sleepy. Will try and conjure up the article as soon as I can.

Cya'll later.

Having a Laptop means...

First off, I would like to start the post with a big...

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

to all the mums out there. Stay golden and stand by your kids. And specially to MY mum (if you're reading this), you're awesome.

Thats that. Oh wow, its 12:55AM now. Thats rather late huh? Will make this brief.

I realise that my perceptions about a couple of everyday objects change as compared to the time before I had my laptop. Strange but true. Like for example:

I walk into a Starbucks outlet,
I see an empty sofa, all plush and comfortable looking.
I see a wooden chair, rock hard not at all appealing, BUT there's a 3 pin power socket beside.

Which will I choose?

In the PAST (w/o Laptop):
"ZOMG SOFA ATTACK!!!@#!@!"

NOW:
"Lets analyse the idea position for the angle of the shot, and ask ourselves if sitting there would profit our move and what is the MARKETING MIX? And oh, I'll need power to work on my LAPTOP and have a conference online with my team members."

As you can see from the above observation, owning a laptop EVOLVES a person. Subjective as to if its for the better or the worse but guess I'll have to live around it.

5 tell-tale signs to see if someone uses or owns a laptop:
1) He/She looks at every power socket weirdly
2) He/She swears when you say you're going to a non wireless surf zone
3) He/She looks at newly bought CDs funny
4) He/She walks with a hunch or a limp (weight issues)
5) He/She goes to Starbucks just to surf on Youtube

All in all, we should have laptops. No, they're not paying me to say this but yea, its a great invention really; The personal computer that is PORTABLE. I'll end here cause its late. Will update with articles soon.

Cya'll later!

I Spy... (Part 4)

Blogging from Starbucks at a certain location on the island. Surprisingly, WirelessSG isn't giving me the usual connectivity issues; its freaking stable.

Once again, I decided to venture out into the harsh and cold (not really) world in contrary to the comfort of my home to do my work. The workload we get in Poly by far (from my opinion), is similar if not more than the workload of a professional worker in the industry. Determination goes a long way.

I'll keep this update short as I've got loads to do, in a short duration.

Friday night Starbucks sessions, period. Two words: Laugh+Hysterical. Link the words up yourself. All I can say is that I've never laughed so hard in a long time. lol.

And as usual, its time for a little game of...

The Human Mind; A Powerful Tool or just a Voice Inside Us?

I think about issues and matters all the time. Be it on the bus, standing in the middle of a huge crowd or even when I'm eating. However, I realise my mind sets into an automatic "wander mode" in two particular durations; when I bath and when I'm on the bed about to sleep.

Queer isn't it? I mean those two durations aren't exactly the most interactive and social periods of my life but it is during then when my mind is the most active as I think about personal issues (commonly) as well as a myriad of other topics. Thus it is no wonder or astonishment that I often fabricate my ideas (weird ones) and thoughts about certain aspects of my life.

The human mind works in ways unknown.

For years or even since the dawn of time, people have been trying to put a definite solution or answer as to how the mind works largely to no avail. All due to the simple fact that the human mind holds no boundaries.

I'll not endeavour the task of defining how the mind works but more rather, share my two cents on the complexity of the human mind and insights into using your mind to your advantage rather then the contrary.

From a scientific viewpoint, the epicenter of the human mind is commonly perceived at the brain of a particular individual. It is the brain that controls the entire nervous system in the human body and to put it simply, it is the "command center"; it controls the major functions of the body.

However, I personally feel that the human is not only restricted to the brain. To me, there is no central location where the human mind is located. The entire body functions and constitutes to the mind itself. The five senses especially plays a vital role in influencing the decisions and the way the mind works.

Why is this so?

The senses are in a way, how the body perceives and comes in contact with the outside world. They are the "windows" and the medium used for external interaction. Be it Touch, Smell, Taste, Sight or Hear, these are how we as humans, communicate with our surroundings and respond to stimulus.

These senses (as mentioned earlier) influence the way our mind works and its thus proven on many grounds in the field of psychology, which is the intensive study of the human mind and behaviour.

Ever heard of the "Forbidden Toy Study" carried out by Elliot Aronson and Merrill Carlsmith who were social psychologists about Cognitive Dissonance? Or W.S.Small's experiment with rats in a maze? These are fine examples of how the senses affect the psychological aspect of human beings.

Another aspect we have to consider in relation to the human mind is the human Emotion. As elaborated in one of my previous blog articles (Emotions; A Flaw In The Human Design?), emotions can affect the behaviour and the mind of a particular individual adversely.

Naturally, the human mind is influenced by emotions too as we as living organisms have feeling. Certain decisions might be affected and influenced depending on the emotion and I'm sure this is evident in our daily lives.

So is the human mind just a powerful tool that can be manipulated if used properly or is it just a part of the "entire human package"?

As mentioned, the human mind and emotion works hand in hand. Personally to me, the human emotion defines the soul of a person and in contrast, the human mind is the engine and processor that runs the soul and gives it life. We're exposed and accustomed to images of mindless zombies in horror films; an image of what we as humans, will be like without the soul, engine and processor.

So can we use the human mind to its fullest potential? Is it possible for one to manipulate another person purely based on the use of the mind?

I'm sure many of you would have watched or at least heard of this character from the comic book series (and recently a series of movies) X-men, called Professor X who is renown for his "amazing mind controlling abilities".

No, I'm not referring to abilities of that sought but more rather, manipulating via actions. We may not realise it but in fact, many of us are already applying these techniques to a certain extent. On a more subtle level, something called PR (people relation) skills are actually part of this so called manipulation. Other aspects are also involved, but I shan't elaborate (due to various reasons).

If one is able to master and learn the techniques of mind control and persuasion, it is no doubt that the individual will be one up in society. The power of super persuasion is incredible and in a sense, fearful.

To conclude, the mind is subjective and to some, it may be just a voice inside but I choose to think otherwise. To me, its both a tool and a part of existence. The mind might differentiate right from wrong, truth or lie, but is it, as always, up to the individual to decide how he or she wants to use it.

Personally, I use my mind for various reasons, a source of infinite inspiration, a place where no one but myself can go to, a reasoning department and of course, a place where I find my perspective of the world.

I'm sure everyone has different purposes in life and their minds are thus structured differently.

So let us work to perfect the strength of our minds and attain a one up in our lives.

I'm Lovin' It (not)

Blogging from MacDonalds at KBCC. As usual, WirelessSG's giving me problems. Gah...

Modem at home's not working (at all) and being a rightful citizen, I decided to head down to the "Wireless Surf Zone". Trust me, it isn't fast nor easy to connect AT ALL. Or maybe its just this place...

Oh look, its my ex-Table tennis senior. Man... brings me back to the days of secondary school. He's here to study too I presume, judging from the amount of notes he has sprawled out on the table. We're all busy people; lets all blame the society. Lol.

Alrighty, less talk now, time to get back to work. As usual, will update with articles soon.

Its Time to Rumble...

Finally! A chance to update. Its been a busy week for me, period. Projects, tutorials, lectures... oh the usual stuff. And oh yea... one more thing ICAs...

Tomorrow marks the start of 0608's ICA1 Presentations and I'm pretty sure everyone's busy preparing as I speak. No doubt nervy tensions are in the air right now. Don't worry, I'm sure we're all able to do our best tomorrow!

I found out that the school is actually quite a neat place to hang out, during the evening hours where human traffic subsides. Hmm...

As for my articles, I'll start updating them as soon as I get the chance (more rather, time) to do so. My apologies for those disappointed at the inconsistent blog articles.

“Drunken Masters” is pretty addictive though. “Give me a martini.” Coming right up!

Oh well, guess its time to get back to my work and revision. Check back for updates.

Not gonna say too much here, I've got loads to do at the moment. But one thing's for sure...

It just doesn't make sense at all. Unless the world has ended. I mean for example, does Pastamania ever run out of Pasta? I think not. This isn't happening...

Teamwork; The Driving Force of a Company?

The bulk of Polytechnic life is centered around projects and ICAs (in course assessments) which so often or another, requires students to not only excel individually, but also "be a team player".

I'm sure almost everyone have been subjected to some degree of teamwork at some point of their lives and I'm quite sure that at some point, malicious intent would have been harboured against a particular team member for example. Thankfully so far, I have not been in situations like that (and I don't wish to be). I've been put into great teams for my modules and are looking forward to working hand in hand with them on various projects.

However, let us talk about the various aspects of teamwork and effective communication between team members in a group. Is teamwork really that important?

I'm sure the term teamwork is evidently used around the world, be it in huge organizations, companies or even in sports teams. But what does it really mean? What really is Teamwork?

Teamwork is a "Cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause" (as cited from dictionary.com). Certain keywords in the defination such as "coordinated" and "cooperative" hints at the required ingredients that constitutes to good teamwork.

In order to have good teamwork, members of the particular group have to be, as mentioned earlier, coordinated and cooperative as these are two very important factors that will ensure the success or failure of the project.
Without Cooperation, members will not listen to anyone and act upon their own instinct; a perfect recipe for failure. It is absolutely vital that someone steps up and takes charge to ensure cooperation. A saying goes that "a ship without a ruddle is like a group without a leader" and I personally find it very sensible and logical.

The human aspect of working in a group is certainly, by far the hardest to manage as different individuals working together would commonly result in various disagreements thus, slowing the work rate and productivity. I personally feel that amongst the group of people working together, there has to be a leader, a ruddle to steel the group in the right direction. This importance cannot be stressed enough.

Naturally, the leader of the group has to be capable and determined about the current project at hand. A leader of a group, any group, has to be sure of the decisions made and the direction in which the group is heading or aiming towards. Importantly, the leader must be able to command attention and respect and that falls to the cooperation of its members. The toughest job falls to the leader; to ensure eveyone works together effectively.

Communication within the group will ensure the coordination aspect of the group. Having good communication and rapport with everyone else in the group usually makes working in the group more fun and productive which will improve work rate and the quality of the products at the end.

Coordination naturally comes with good cooperation in the group and having said that, let us now look as the aspects and benefits of a group with excellent teamwork.

In every company, be it an MNC or a private film, there has to be a certain structure of authority protocol that everyone has to follow. Usually, the CEO (also known as the boss) of the company, makes and charts directional decisions for the company. That also makes him the most important person in the company (or so to speak).

Having a good team within the company would ensure that these plans are followed accordingly with as little downtime as possible; in the world of business, time is money and vice versa. This is where good teamwork comes into play.

They say that "two heads are better than one" which is relatively true. I feel that a team with good teamwork which means "acting as a team" (as mentioned earlier), will beat an outstanding individual hands down no matter how outstanding that individual is. This is just the way of how things work; we're harder and tougher in a group rather then solitary.
Ever tried breaking a chopstick? Yes, I'm sure that is easily done but now try breaking a bundle of chopsticks. Not so easy I presume. From this analogy, the benefits of having good teamwork are unrivaled.

This is why good teamwork is stressed in sectors of businesses. It is rare that people work or function alone without a team because having numbers is considered an advantage too.

The trick of teamwork is actually through cooperation and coordination (as mentioned earlier) amongst the members.

So next time when you're working in a group and feel like giving up or biting the head of another group member off, take some time and look at what the group is doing wrongly. Emotions very often deter individuals from achieving their rightly deserved success so do not let them have a chance at you. Believe in yourself and persistence will certainly pay off.

So let us work towards having better teamwork amongst our groups and working towards our success!

Updated Bucketlist

I've update my bucketlist. Currently it needs around 10 more tasks before its completed. And as usual, I'm up for suggestions for my other 10 tasks; feel free to give me ideas.

Well, I best get started on my article. Check back for updates!

Iron Man; A Personal Insight

Just got home not too long ago from a little movie whom I watched with a couple of friends.

We had dinner out at Subway (excellent choice) and headed over to Starbucks (ditto) to chill out before our movie at 8:40pm. I wasn't really keen on watching the movie (mostly due to the fact that the ticket cost me $10) but I conformed anyway.

The time reads 1:26am, so I'm probably gonna keep this article short, sweet and to the point (as long as I stay awake).

*SPOILER ALERT*

Title Of Movie:
Iron Man

Impression Of The Movie (before watching it):
As I've mentioned earlier in the post, I wasn't really keen and hyped up about the whole Iron Man pheomenon thing that has been speculating around for quite some time now. To be brutally honest, I'm not much of a comic book fan; I don't really read classical super hero comics. I wouldn't die if I were deprived of the chance to watch it, I guess.

Technical Analysis Of The Movie (Brief)

Content:
Basically the content, to me, was the most disappointing aspect of the whole movie and this was mainly due to the fact that it was a comic book based story plot; there won't be room for much to wow audiences who have rough ideas or impressions of Iron Man. Its pretty much your average "guy returns from life changing experience and decides to turn into a superhero and fight for justice" kind of storyline. The story observed a basic narrative flow of events which could further be played upon in the film. The "epic showdown" between Iron Man and in-movie nemesis, 'Iron Monger" climaxes the entire movie and vivid action scenes are encrypted into the audiences' minds. There won't be room (or so I think) for a sequel partly because Tony Stark reveals in a press conference scene towards the end of the movie that "I Am Iron Man" upon deep deliberation, something that he does NOT do throughout the entire comic series (or so I understand)

An interesting aspect of the film content however, is due to the fact that the events that happen during the movie and the settings, are very much real and current that is happening in the whole now. What I'm refering to is the reference of the war on Terrorism that is played crucially in the film. The fact that both fictional and real world issues are put in the mix of a comic based movie such as this one is complimentary.

Visual:
Without a doubt, the visual element in the movie is the main attraction of it all. From hi-tech gadgets like computerised assistants, the Iron Man suit etc to awesome graphics and digital rendering that has been put into the production process, the film is sure to give CGI junkies a run for their money. Even car junkies (such as myself) are treated to eye candies in the form of the Audi R8, RS4 and others.
Character-wise, the portrayal of Iron Man is certainly spot on; its exactly like that of the original comic, if not better. The props fabricated for the movie were state of the art and in ways similar to the movie, advance and life-like. The visual component of the entire movie would certainly score points with critics and to me, the grahpics are really cool and off the charts.

Talents (Cast):
The main role of the protagonist, Iron Man aka. Tony Stark, is perfectly played by Robert Downey Jr. He looks the part, thinks like the part and most importantly, feels like the part. A little humour is injected here and there in the movie and that actually spices things up; something which the audience would enjoy in a good movie.
The choice of talents used in the film are pretty much suitable as they very much look the part, especially the afghanistan troops and their leaders. However, a more impactful villian would have been more effective if used in the movie.

Audio:
Rocking tracks accompany various scenes of the movie. From AC/DC to Black Sabbath, I feel that the mood generated is very much on the same vibe as compared to rock genre pieces; hardcore, head bobbing and mind blowing. Thus making it an effective medium to bring its messages across effectively. The idea of Iron Man itself came from a rock song similarly titled by Black Sabbath. Stan Lee drew inspiration from that song and somehow, fabricated the entire concept of Iron Man. Naturally, the song played during the finale and ended the movie off, on a high vibe.

Impression Of Movie (after watching it):
I finally see why Iron Man has been much anticipated amongst comic junkies and fans alike however, its a movie that I would want to watch but NOT insist on doing so. And even as I walk out of the theater, that thought never left. I found the story content a wee bit of a disappointment; I was looking for at least a twist in the plot. But coming from a comic series, it is understandable in a way as story content would usually not stray too far from the original.
Its probably a show that I would watch 3 times (maximum) in a row and again after a couple of months if resouces grant (note that I'm NOT a comic junkie whatsoever). I appreaciate the graphics, audio and talents in the show but was personally looking for a little more in terms of content, as mentioned

Movie Score:
3.7/5

edit: i'm so freaking pissed with the html coding that i'm gonna STOP fiddling with it and go to bed. Gah...
