Lonely Road; The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Live in Concert.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Lonely Road Concert, Live in Singapore.

What a horrible idea.

Yes indeed it was, as you managed to get out of your seat and squeeze your way out of the packed bus 88, with majority of the commuters on board being the after office crowd.

For the pass hour or so, you’ve been stuck on the bus, trying to get to Downtown East, more specifically for the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus concert; something you’ve been looking forward to since one of your friends told you about them coming to town a few weeks back.

And as you got off the bus, a quick glance at your phone revealed no more than 45 minutes to the “start” of the show. Well, at least that was the timing written on the ticket.

but most importantly, your friends were already at the concert venue, waiting for you. You felt really really bad for making them wait and after explanatory text messages and even phone calls, you decided to take a cab; desperate times calls for desperate measures.

-

Not long after, the cab reaches the destination and you got off, with much a heighten sense of rush and of course, anxiety.

In the distance, you see a vague outline of a tent which is D’Marquee, the concert venue.

You decided that it would be faster to take the “back route” and as you were walking pass the back of the tent, you notice a couple of men dressed in suits who struck uncanny resemblances to a couple of members of the band (namely Bassist, Joey Westwood and Drummer, Jon Wilkes).

However as you were running short on time, you decided that it would have been wiser to join your friends, who were already in the queue. (later on, you realise that those weren’t members of the band but were merely part of the entourage ie. sound guys/stage hands.)

-

The queue was of significant length but thankfully, your friends were already at the front portion of the steadily moving line of concert goers.

And not long after that, you guys were already in the concert hall.

The venue was relatively small as compared to previous concert venues you’ve been to (ie. Singapore Indoor Stadium, Fort Canning Green) but nevertheless, it provided ample space for everyone, a crowd of about 200 strong and growing with people streaming in steadily.

You and your friends decided to filter right as you know what happens in the middle of the crowd during rock concerts as such. (!)

IMG_0083The Set, for 2 bands on showcase.

A glimpse of the stage revealed the set for the night’s entertainment. As you understand from one of you friends, A Vacant Affair, local band from Singapore, will be opening the show, thus explaining 2 drum sets on stage. (another one clothed, behind the other, faintly seen in the picture.)

And you knew that it was due to the fact that Jon was a left handed drummer, which meant that he would have to use a different set configuration.

Hunger soon exhumed in the form of stomachs growling as you and your friends soon felt the tinge to eat, having to have not had anything decent to eat prior to the concert.

Your group soon engaged in casual conversation while waiting for the show to start. (With topics largely centred around food.)

-

A while later, the stage lights dimmed and the crowded erupted into cheers. Needless to say, the opening band was about to perform.

Local rockers, A Vacant Affair, soon took the stage and warmed the crowd with tunes of their own.

IMG_0084IMG_0085 A Vacant Affair’s set.

You felt that A Vacant Affair’s set was a tad too loud for your liking and you didn’t really grasp the lyrics of their songs. You also thought that their guitars were over cranked and overwhelmed the rest of the band.

You did however, enjoy the stage presence that the guys from AVA brought out (they were really energetic).

But at least the band got the crowd warmed up for the main event and as they left the stage, the crowd was all hyped up for the band that they paid and came to see.

Chants of “red jumpsuit, red jumpsuit!” were heard from sections of the crowd, indicating their excitement.

Perhaps the worse part of the whole thing was waiting. As hunger was already creeping up on you and your friends, it made the wait seemingly longer, and nearly unbearable; evident from the rest of the crowd as well.

You knew that the crowd had gone restless (and on the verge of insanity) when they starting cheering at the sound man who started to tune the guitars and tested the microphones.

And so you waited. And waited…

-

After a seemingly lifetime’s duration of waiting, the house lights started to dim, and as if on cue, the crowd went crazy.

Yes, it was about time. Slowly, you see the various band members come onstage in minimum lighting.

The hi-hat sounded and a familiar tune soon resumed. The crowd went wild.

IMG_0089IMG_0090

High Octave action satisfies everything.

Sounds of their newest hit single, “You Better Pray” soon filled the air and everyone jumped along in excitement and anticipation.

You too felt the rush of excitement and was soon grooving to the catchy beat of the new tune, as with the other people in the crowd around you.

And strangely, your hunger pangs were seemingly cast aside as you sang along to the familiar tune.

IMG_0091IMG_0092 IMG_0093The New Line-up.

You knew that not too long ago, Elias Reidy, former guitarist, left the band and the once group of five was reduced to a 4 man set.

Interestingly, the band managed to find a stand-in guitarist (dude with the red guitar to the right of the pictures above) and was introduced to the crowd, though unfortunately, you didn’t get the name of.

In a moment of comic relief, you and your friends agreed that he looked like Jack Black. You even shouted out to him, much to the amusement of the people around you.

IMG_0094IMG_0096 Tunes which you already know by hard.

More familiar tunes were belted out. From the highly energetic “False Pretense”, which got the crowd clapping, to the head-banging favourite of “In Fate’s Hands”, there was hardly a moment’s respite from the high tempo rock tunes that the band jammed to.

You felt really good as you sang along to almost if not all of their songs, for these guys are probably the top of your list of favourite bands.

You also felt that most of their songs were very suited for crowd interaction, as the crowd could usually clap along, sing along, or in someway or another, get involved with the song.

The song, “Waiting” was one good example, where the crowd had to sing to parts of the chorus.

“We’re gonna play more songs off our old record tonight since we’re here for the very first time.”

This led to even louder cheers from the crowd as lead singer, Ronnie Winters, interacted with the audience, clearly being more comfortable and familiar with the older records.

You also thought that Ronnie’s ability to scream for such sustained periods of time was simply amazing and awesome.

IMG_0097IMG_0098 Mellow at times as well.

The night was not all rock and roll though.

Melodic tunes ensured in the form of “Cat and Mouse”, a sub-piano piece where guitarist Duke Kitchens took to the keys. The song got the crowd singing and swaying as Ronnie showed his vocal capabilities in the form of mellow and highly emotional melodies.

IMG_0101 IMG_0103 Head Bang. Now.

Everything soon resumed after that mellow respite.

“What do you guys wanna listen to now?”

Drummer Jon Wilkes questioned the crowd only to be responded by endless tirades of “Face down!” screams from the crowd.

That all too familiar starting drum rift soon played and the crowd when into a mode of frenzy.

You thought your ear drums were going to give way as the crowd around you screamed at the top of their lungs.

Naturally you know that everyone in the hall would know “Face Down” and as if to confirm that claim, everyone sang along to the catchy song about an abusive relationship.

You felt that the lyrics to the song after, “Justify” were especially interesting and thought provoking.

IMG_0105IMG_0106A crowd pleaser.

Your legs are tired. Your voice, sore from singing along. Your stomach, growling.

Pen and Paper”, your personal favourite from the new record was played but other than that and the opener, “You Better Pray”, you hardly remember any other songs from the new record.

A mini interval followed and several members of the band left the stage. Ronnie however, walked over to reach for his acoustic guitar.

And the crowd knew which song it was for.

He started out a couple of random tunes on the guitar but you couldn’t really make out what song it was.

Your Guardian Angel” soon echoed in the air and everyone sang along, obviously to a song that they’ve heard or have come across before.

IMG_0110 IMG_0108 IMG_0109 “I wanna see that mosh pit over there reforming.”

The concert was drawing to its climax but the crowd’s spirit remained as high as ever.

For a moment you felt like joining in the mosh pit that had opened up for the last song, “Grim Goodbye” upon Ronnie’s request, but you chose otherwise.

And with one final octave, the concert ended and the band left the stage, throwing drumsticks, guitar picks and random balls or tape (which was stuck to Joey’s back at one point) into the crowd. You almost managed to catch that ball of tape.

IMG_0111 Awesome Experience. Awesome Concert.

Your legs crumbled as you walked out of the concert hall, clearly satisfied. Your voice is sore from singing along to all the songs played by the band.

And as you hobble off in search of food and refreshments with your friends, you can’t help but think that that was one of, if not the best concert you’ve ever seen in your life, thus far.

With tunes still replaying in your head, you head out through the exit, as with hundreds of others, with that look of satisfaction splashed across their faces.

Hopefully these guys will be back, you thought to yourself. You could really use such an awesome experience again.

-> The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Lonely Road concert live in Singapore, 10 March 2009. 2 thumbs up!

The Education Medium

Complication leads to Beauty.

Teaching is never easy, with much variation from the saying "those who can't do, teach".

In my opinion, teaching and educating is one of, if not, the most demanding profession in the world. A big claim I know but few of you guys out there might agree.

Just reminisce and think back on the times when in school, especially high school, where your inner child would unleash himself or herself, much to the disdain and inconvenience to teachers and educators alike.

I'm guilty of that, and I'm sure many of you guys out there are too. Looking back, those memories are certainly amusing yet interesting to ponder over.

For me, my interpretation of teaching constitutes to commitment and that would mean passion; passion comes naturally with commitment. And being a part time educator myself, I've seen my fair share of hair pulling moments.

Take the session today (well, Thursday) for example. I guess my limits were tested and this is why I've always admired educators; they're able to extend their personal limits to boundaries which no ordinary human profession can.

To Learn and to Understand.

On a personal level, I've experience my fair share of awesome as well as not so awesome educators in my course of education for the pass, (pause to count the years) 12 years or so (including kindergarten, yea I know).

Thankfully, I've been more exposed to positive influences in the form of educators rather than those of the opposite spectrum. From those who literally became my "day care mother" to those who deeply inspired me, each and everyone of them etched in my mind.

There has always been this "power distance" between educators and students, an unknown "rule" between both parties (but more prominently amongst students). At lower levels of education, this is especially obvious, well for me at least.

During my days of primary education, I've always thought and looked at teachers with this aura like thing; teachers and students are not allowed to have friendships amongst the other, like how they treat their peers.

It a good thing though, I feel. For one, that certain level of respect is cultivated and it is definitely something that every human being will need to know and learn.

However as I progress through the levels of education, I noticed a change in this "power distance", especially my recent graduation to tertiary education.

At higher levels of education, we find that the distance between educator and student lessens. Lessens, but does not cease to exist, which can be a common but dangerous perception.

I feel that as that distance lessens, students and educators build closer bonds amongst each other and that is good, and healthy.

The declination comes when this distance is totally ignored.

As mentioned, it does NOT cease to exist and some people overlook that fact and the result? That level of respect is lost.

They say that respect is earned, and that everyone lives to be respected to a certain level. And when respect is lost, people feel violated, offended and insulted and that's where things go out of hand.

I guess that line has to be very distinctly drawn, the line that signifies and differentiates respect and building a relationship.

Underrated as it seems, I really feel that educators deserve all the credit that we can give them. After all, it is they who teach and educate, isn't it?

Well, that's that for a little update, on to the more realistic side of life.

I realize that this and the previous post were all themed around education and the such. I guess that might be a little mundane and dry but hey, we cannot deny the fact that its something each and every single one of us is exposed to can we?

On the lighter side, I foresee that next Tuesday, 10 of March, will be a really really good day, cause yet another awesome (in my opinion, haters feel free to dis) band is coming to town!

Lonely Road, their latest release.

Yes, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

I've been a (loyal) listener of their works since a couple of years ago and these guys are certainly one of the first few alternative/post hardcore bands that I listened to, so certainly an influence there.

Their latest release may come off as a little "pop-ish" and "mainstream", but all in all, a change in direction for the band, which may or may not be a good thing.

It still strikes a good chord with me though, so its all good. Be sure to check out their music on myspace or youtube, if you're interested (and go get the tickets if you're really up for it).

Alright, I guess that's it for this little update check back for updates and the lot. More good stuff to follow, I promise.

Till then, Godspeed.

Examinations; Understanding or Memorising?

Take a Step back, and think.

I wouldn't consider my holidays to be in full swing, nor is it in a total standstill. Due to some unpredicted circumstance, total liberation from school has been delayed, to much dismal reception.

On hindsight, I've never been a real big fan of written examinations, but I mean, who is?

2 hours spent in a cold room with nothing but pen, brain and hand. All those late nights, all those long hours spent memorizing factual information, everything lies within those 2 precious hours.

Make it or break it.

Since the dawn of time (seemingly), examinations have always been the forefront of being an indication of a person's understanding of the subject, well at least in the current trend of society.

What you know, is what you're worth, or so they say.

Sure, education is about understanding and ultimately learning, but really, let us take a step back and reminisce the times where nights of precious sleep was given up due to the following day's exams.

Is this learning?

Often I heard the people around me, even educators, talking about written examinations. Multiple interpretations arise but my personal favorite has to be "exams are just vomiting everything out, and back onto the script, which is then handed in".

An interesting analogy I feel.

The society's indication of a person's worth is limited in terms of measurement standards. The number of As you have in your report card often determines your chances of getting the job you desire.

And to me, that is largely disturbing. The society has "evolved" to such stage that we are so result oriented. So much so that we lose sight of the big picture.

However, this is where the paradox comes in.

Examinations does have its educational uses as well. For one, the presence of exams acts as a spur and a drive for individuals to actually make an effort to learn something. And ironically, being in such a result oriented society, that in itself is a motivator.

It is human nature that when we lose out, we feel horrible and we naturally want to do better, to compete and to excel; nobody likes or wants to lose.

To draw the line between boundaries.

We have to draw the line very clearly between knowing something and understanding it; what you know might not be something you understand.

And for me, education is all about understanding and learning something new. Never mind if you know the exact use of Mandelstam variables or the definition of quantum chromodynamics by the tip of your hands, understanding the theory and the principle behind such complexities in life is what I feel education is all about.

Sure, all hell breaks lose when the storm comes but what happens after that?

Right that's that. Now for a little update on metallic-stains.

Its been quite awhile since the blog's last post (as seen below) largely due to exams and school commitments but since that's (almost) behind, we're back in business.

For starters, I've added a little something to make interaction easier (and faster) with you guys my readers.

Blogger introduced this new feature quite some time ago and thus I'm putting it into use. Here it is,

As seen at the end of every post.

Reactions. That's what the feature is called (its the "yes" and "no" thing beside "Dig the post?") and its basically a "poll" where readers can click, select and express how they feel about the post.

Pretty interesting huh.

With Reactions, it'll be easier to obtain feedback about the post and the blog, and also easier to see if people like (or hate) the particular post. So yea, feel free to use the feature.

Its always a nice feeling to me when I see visitors from all over the world on metallic-stains. Recently I've been observing a flow of visitors interesting countries all over the world and I really appreciate that.

And you guys out there if you're reading this, feel free to comment and a big shout out to all of you.

Also, feel free to follow the blog by clicking on the "follow this blog" feature located on the right tool bar for updates.

Audrey has been busy of late and for those interested, be sure to visit the flickr page (link is located on the toolbar to the right).

Alright, I guess that's that for now. Metallic-stains is back, so be sure to check back for updates and the lot.

Great stuff soon to come.

Stay Gold!

For the first time in metallic-stains history, you readers out there will be treated to something never seen before.

A short post.

Yes, I've been on hiatus BUT I'll be back really soon (in a week's time or so with effect from the date of this post).

Reason? Well, you might have guessed it, Examinations.

Think of it not as inactivity but as a respite. A short respite I guess.

So yea, check back in a week's time, readers. Great stuff to come out really soon.

Watch this space.

See you guys, in abit.

Out with the Old, In with the New

The Change.

Sometimes we feel the need for change, the need for something different or something new. At that particular micro second in time, what is it that makes us decide that there is a need for replacement, a change?

Sometimes when we reach a particular point in our lives, we are faced with one, if not numerous alternatives towards a certain approach.

Which one will we take? Which path will ultimately satisfy us fully?

Its interesting to see that when we see a need for change, we do it automatically, usually without complains. But what happens when we're forced to change? We detest and resent and we wish that things would stay the same.

Why is this so?

The only explanation I can confer to is simply because we as human beings are largely insecure. No matter who we are, be it a figurehead in society or just an average citizen, I believe that there is a certain sense of fear in changing.

It is a curious thought that people are fearful of change, but when they see a need and automatically initiates that change, that fear is no longer there.

Call it need recognition if you will, but when change is imminent we set off to accomplish the task of change; thus defining the need for change.

I believe that change, is the process in itself. So what is the action of change?

When we see something that is in need of change, when we see a certain weakness in a system or a strategy or more viciously, when we see someone in a different light as before, what do we do?

This feeling is curious and something which I would like to explore deeper and more in depth, but at a later period; partly due to the complexity of the subject and the way in which I would like to explore the subject matter.

More detail will be released in due timing.

Interesting.

Well, the pass couple of weeks were certainly involving to a huge extend; assignments galore. I hardly had time to think about things I would normally ponder over, which can be a good or a bad thing, depending on the circumstance.

However, this week saw the completion of a variety of projects and assignments which I (and for the part, various teammates) took on.

Amongst the lot, highlights were probably the (much anticipated) music video production which was required of us for the Storyboard Module.

Well, here it is, after weeks of preparation and (careful) planning, the final product,

"Best I Ever Had", Vertical Horizon. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7QqsoYNKFg)

I must say, though the production was not of top quality (due to time constrains during both editing as well as filming), the final product turned up substantially well.

Personal favorite: flashback scene towards the end of the video.

I'm sure all that planning and conceptualization during pre-production has certainly paid off and I'm especially happy and captivated with the entire concept of the video.

I guess this is the gist of producing the video, the satisfaction yield at the end of everything. When you see the production that you and your team have spent so much time working on, with blood (not really), sweat and tears (not really either) all put in, being shown on the big screen, that satisfaction and feeling is dare I say, an out of this world experience.

Yes, it could have been much much better but hey, there's always room for improvement.

Moving on to more festive insights.

The Chinese New Year must-have, Yusheng.

Well officially, Chinese New Year happened a couple of days back but due to the immerse workload, I had to forgo a majority of the proceedings as a result.

I've never actually been a fan of the festival, to be totally honest, until this year that is. I've never truly understood the significance of the festival nor abode strictly to its traditional beliefs.

But however, that insensitive side of me seem to cease of recent times.

I'm curious to know what the younger generation feel and perceive the new year as. Is it just another festival with an additional 2 days off from school? Or is it the time of the year where money comes in the form of red packets which results in an increased intake in pocket money allowance?

That aside, I'd like to think otherwise.

I feel that Chinese New Year (or any festival for that matter) isn't about red packets, tidbits or gambling while wearing red undergarments.

It is a time for the family; its like the creator's way of reserving time so that people can communicate and bond with their kin.

In our modern society, we are constantly on the go, and our minds turn from being primal to being materialistic as we view food from being a sustenance to a need in every consumer's mind.

Deterioration of the human mind perhaps? Will we still remember the humane side of our well being?

I guess this is where festivals such as Chinese New Year comes in. Whether if its to usher in the lunar new year, or to mark the start of a new chapter, I feel that the underlying purpose ultimately lies with spending time building relationships with the people around you, and appreciating them.

So think again, if you see the upcoming festive holidays as "time away from the office" or "days with no school". I'm sure its much more than just that.

I apologize for the short hiatus currently being put into motion but things should be very much on schedule now that major projects are out of the way.

Be sure to check back for updates and the lot.

Embrace change and stay sharp!

Own Time, Own Target, Own Passion

The Rush of our time.

I've been on a mini hiatus of late due to the immerse amount of school work and commitments. The school semester reaches its end which probably explains the increased workload.

However, the coming towards the end of a semester also means the impending arrival of the holidays and big plans are already set for the coming break. But most importantly, it'll involve you guys, yes you guys, the readers of metallic-stains.

I shan't reveal too much here but do check back for updates, though activity will be largely reduced due to the influx of work.

My apologies for that.

Recently, I've been involved in a myriad of projects; most of which I thoroughly enjoy. There were a couple of prominent ones in the process.

The main highlight of the lot has to be the upcoming music video production where we are supposed to produce our very own music video.

Well, being a Drool Bits Production (the makers of Encode/Decode and "Where are you?"), we have decided to incorporate a few not so common approaches to the execution and feel of the music video production.

Imagine.

No spoilers as yet but all I can say is that our dear Audrey's been hard at work for the pass couple of days.

We're currently in the midst of production and certainly very good stuff along the way so be sure to check back on our progress.

A week or so back saw the release of the O level results and the Polytechnic's Open House. My deepest congratulations to all who did well but for those who feel disappointed for whatever reason, fret not and just follow your dreams no matter what.

It was, in a way, a very nostalgic period for me personally as well. Barely a year ago, I was in that situation whist making the transition from secondary to tertiary education.

Sure, it was an audacious and trying process but I can safely (and happily) say that I've found what I'm looking for.

My tertiary education made me realize that its not about what you do or how well you do it, its about how much do you like doing it.

Many a time in life, we find ourselves doing things which we either don't enjoy, things we are forced into doing or even things which we simply have to do.

This can be dangerous, I feel. I look at the people around me every time I get the opportunity to take the morning bus or train (which is filled with working professionals)and I think its sad to see that they are living their lives with simply "no choice at all" and that they are just "in it for the money"; clearly, they don't enjoy whatever they're doing.

I pondered on the reason for such a phenomenon.

Are we really slaves to the dollars of our pockets in our society?

I'd really hope not.

We live in such a materialistic world and I guess that's the main culprit behind such occurrences. Many individuals give up on their dreams as they are either too radical, impractical or are just able to find a "better" alternative.

While making the transition to tertiary education, I knew that it was there and then which would decide my future and whatever I would probably be doing for the rest of my life.

So thus, here I am now.

While many might not understand why I would lug Audrey around, in search of pictures, compose a 10000 word post or spend day and night working on a particular production or project, I can safely identify the reason.

It just keeps going on, doesn't it?

Its not about the money, its not about the time, its all about personal satisfaction and creative satisfaction.

They say that if you enjoy whatever you're doing, its not considered work anymore.

To an extend, that statement holds its validity but to me, I draw reward from satisfaction.

However, I'm pretty sure that each and every individual will have his or her own form of satisfaction thus I'll post this to you guys out there,

What is Satisfaction to you?

I'll be looking forward to your reactions but in the meantime, reflect and ask yourself if you're truly happy with whatever you're doing with your life as of right now.

If not, how can you improve? If so, how can you keep it up or strengthen this way of living?

For me personally, I feel that the media has not only roused my interest but also has given me a platform to express myself freely and creatively, and in that sense, I find my satisfaction.

No matter how obtuse or eccentric your idea of satisfaction may be, if that's what floats you boat, hey don't let anyone put you down.

Plenty to think about for the time being and be sure to check back regularly for updates and content. Looking forward to all your feedback and comments to the topic.

Metallic-stains will be involved in a major upcoming project though details will be slowly revealed over the weeks.

Keep Chasing those Dreams!

If a Picture paints a thousand words

Its more than pointing and shooting.

Its been awhile since I last featured or talked about a particular subject matter amongst my post so for today's post, we'll be talking about producing a good picture and my personal rational and interpretation behind pictures.

So before you can say "pic spam!", let me warn you that you've been told...

A different perspective to things oblivious to the naked eye.

Well, I can safely say that I'm by no means, a professional photographer (or anywhere near that association as yet) but I guess producing both still images in the form of photographs as well as moving images in the form of movie and film productions can be considered as recent interests.

Both of which has grown into something deeper than mere passing interest.

Creation is satisfying to some while the Created Product is satisfying to the masses; Creation here being the process while the other, the final product. And that being said, I guess my interest for both aspects of creation has sprouted from the very basis of my course of study.

The Media is vast and ever changing.

While some like to convey their thoughts and ideas via literature, others tend to be more visual and thus convey their perceptions through films and the such. We also have a few others who communicate via still images.

Yes, different mediums are and can be used to communicate and accentuate your ideas, thoughts, beliefs or even perspective, if executed in a suitable method.

Literature, Film and Photos are just examples of different mediums.

And well, for me personally, its a tough internal conflict between the three.

I mean I love to actually write down my ideas, thoughts and perception (as seen here on metallic-stains); I love to make films (as cultivated through my course of study) and hope to make and product short but effective and powerful films in the near future.

Clearly, the newest contender here being the epitome of imaging.

Well, some of you guys out there might have notice a little addition to the link bar to the right and as mentioned in the previous posts, the new member of the management team has indeed widen and developed my interest in the said field.

While metallic-stains stands as my literal take on life, my pictures will (hopefully) represent my visual take on the big picture.

Some of my more visual works can be viewed here, http://www.flickr.com/photos/33694436@N07/ though I'm always open to comments and critical insights regarding my photos, both technically and idealistically.

Technical and Idealistic execution are both important aspects of a picture.

On a technical front, I'm pretty sure that I've got loads more to learn to even consider myself as a photographer. This comes with experience and guidance, things which I consider myself in vital need which (hopefully again) will come in time.

Thus, I chose to work towards my idealistic take on photo taking.

There are millions of photographers out there in the world but the sole appeal of the medium is simple because it gives the people to present their unique perceptions and ideas in the form of pictures.

Well, to me, I feel strongly about the idea and "feel" that the picture is giving me. What is it trying to say? What emotion is it trying to portray?

To me, a good picture means a mind provoking experience, though not always in a negative manner. A good picture should set the viewer thinking and relating.

There are numerous pictures out there on the net and I for one have certainly seen quite a number of good pictures out there, some even able to put my mind into a mental frenzy.

Yes, it is quite appealing and interesting to explore uncharted perceptions and ideas using this medium.

I have an aim every time I interact with Audrey (refer to previous posts for more clarification about the entity). Exploring perceptions has always been something that I value with high regard on a personal level and that is what I aim, every single time I look through her eyes in preparation for a shot.

Thus as we come to the end of this rather concise post, I would like some feedback and advice on the relevant topic;

Which is more important, the Technical or Idealistic aspect of a picture?

Remember to check back for some awesome material coming up and with that I'll see you guys around and hoped you've enjoyed this little feature as much as I did while taking the photos.

Keep Snapping!

As We Say Goodbye

Another year comes while another passes.

First post of the new year, though I admit, it is a little delayed. I guess its due to the bulk of activities as well as the various colorful new year celebrations which I was involved in over the past couple of days.

A difference in the numbers on your calender? I won't presume its that simple. The start of the new year yields much significance as it indicates changes and growth and more importantly, development.

Well, at the start of a new year, I'm pretty sure that the usual cliche surrounds us; new year resolutions, new year wishes, fireworks and the traditional countdown. From squeezing amongst the thronging crowds in hopes of getting the best view of the fireworks display at the stroke of midnight (from wherever you guys are in the world), to writing up new year resolutions on your personal diary or web blog, I'm pretty sure we've "been there, done that".

However here at metallic-stains, we tend to do things a little differently. So instead of the new year's resolution you may see on numerous sites, I'll be doing up a little "new year's appreciation", something which I think, we take for granted in our busy and hectic lives nowadays.

Such memories and reminisces.

Looking Back At Year 2008

Well, the year 2008 has been a turning point in my life, as in individual and also as a 17 year old youngster (understatement, perhaps?). I've undergone a huge change, at least to me personally, especially emotionally, largely due to certain events which happened during the course of the year.

To put it in one sweet statement; I've climbed and fell as I hit the bottom before reaching for the ladder of life again to climb back up.

Certainly the highlight of the year was my new experience in a totally different educational environment in the form of a polytechnic. I've met new people who have taught me things I would have never known or be able to acquire through the medium of the internet; things that can only be derived from real life experience.

I also found my passion. No, we're not talking about an individual here but my passion for the media. Ironically, I've never thought that this was meant to be until I took my first step into the world of media. It was then that I realized that it was a sign.

Pretty deep stuff there but I guess its the little things like that which defines and crafts the outline for the rest of your lives.

I wouldn't have survived, or kept going, without the people around me of course and this would be a great opportunity to show my appreciation via a couple of mentions.

To Mum and Dad, thank you. Thank you for believing in me throughout the years (especially year 2008) and standing by me even when hope was seemingly lost and even though I rarely show it, I really appreciate everything that you guys have done for me, to shape and guide me onto the right path in life. It is family which will stand by you no matter what you become, or how you end up, cause they are after all, your family.

To God Mum, though you'll probably not read this (due to language constrains and my limitation to articulate in mandarin), thank you for everything you've done for me all these years. From cleaning me up before I could even say "mum mum" (which means food, in baby language. I think) to watching me sling my heavy bag everyday as I head out for a new day at school, you've been there taking care of me and I really appreciate that. Thank you.

To Friends, which play a indispensable role on multiple aspects. I'm sure that everyone around me isn't exactly used to such "statements" from me as I don't often show my appreciation openly but a big thank you as well, for being around me and providing me with the laughs and imparting valuable lessons to me. I thank you guys for being there and being happy.

And finally, to the Readers of metallic-stains, who fuel me with my drive and motivation, I thank you formally for your readership. Your support and feedback structures a irreplaceable position in the foundations of the site as well as within the management team. Without you guys, metallic-stains will not be as it is today and with that, I thank you for everything.

2008 has been memorable indeed.

But what's the use of living in the past with your back facing the future?

One follows another; that's how Time works.

Looking Ahead At 2009

As mentioned in my previous post, the year 2009 will see changes which starts with the very site you're staring at right now. Metallic-stains will undergo a minor management change and content organization, details of which can be referred to in the previous post.

In terms of content on the site, I'm pretty sure that 2009 will see a new influx of experiences and inspirational happenings all around which means that readers will be treated to a feast of content from multiple perspectives and thus, will be able to engage themselves in stimulating topic and share their views in the form of comments or feedback.

In terms of course related work, (a couple of months into) 2009 will see the start of my journey as a year 2 individual. Naturally, I'm embracing newer challenges as well as newer learning experiences. Sure, work might get a little more hectic as compared to whatever previously encountered but what's life without the occasional challenge to strengthen one's resolve and expertise?

2009 will be a tough year for many, due to the evident global economic crisis. Financial activity looks set to slowdown which will incur repercussions for sure on everyone in the society.

But while some see it as a defeat, I see this economic situation as a test. A gauge of the society's ability to make the best out of the worse and recover as soon as possible. Belt tightening will have to be practiced (if not already) but I guess its a form of discipline as well.

As we say goodbye to the old and welcome the new, memories will still put that smile back on your face.

So as we say goodbye to 2008 and welcome 2009, let us reflect on the finest moments of year 2008 and smile for all that's worth.

But a coin has two sides and surely the finest moments will have their negative equivalents. Let us not forget the lessons learn in 2008 and take the valuable experience and knowledge along with us into the new year.

This is a new era, a new chapter in our lives and as we say goodbye, think but don't regret, ponder but don't over analyze and finally, react but be happy and stay positive because at the end of the day, being able to sit back with a smile on your face is the best feeling ever.

I'll see you guys around and once again, Happy 2009!

*The management team of metallic-stains.blogspot.com, would like to extend their thanks to the readers all around the world for continuous support of the blog and also wish everyone a Happy and fruitful 2009.

That Feeling

Nature at one of its best.

Its been awhile since I've set foot on the island getaway of Singapore, also known as Sentosa. What better way to spend some quality time with your fellow classmates than a day in the great outdoors, by the sea?

Sun, Sea and Coconuts?

Great company and awesome sights (as seen in the photos) can certainly make one's day.

Well the trip made me realize that more often then not, simple pleasures in life are often around oneself; we just have to look around us carefully. Of course, everyone's interpretation of having fun or "chilling out" might differ from another individual, but if its what makes you happy, then hey, its called having fun I guess.

Take myself for example. The past couple of days for me were spent with dear Audrey here. Everywhere I went, she went with me. Yes, she may be a tad quiet but hey, its awesome company to me.

Here She is, just taking a snooze on the bed.

Oh apologies readers, it seems that I've yet to introduce to you guys the newest member of the metallic-stains management team.

Yes, Audrey the camera has been hard at work for many of the pictures you've seen here on metallic-stains and has played a considerable part in the peppering the posts with picture after picture.

Audrey's a Nikon D60 and has only recently joined the metallic-stains management team. Posts from now on will be introduced to her photo taking capabilities so keep a lookout for that.

Moving away from that.

Christmas is finally here! Ho ho ho!

I'm sure many of you guys out there are enjoying and soaking up the festive mood in full swing this very moment and rightly so as well.

A season of giving; the general mood of Christmas which is deeply influenced by the multiple marketing campaigns, I'm sure. But I have to agree that this is a season where one shows appreciation for the people around him/her.

Which was the reason why I chose to make "Christmas Deliveries" on Christmas eve itself.

To me, nothing beats the look on a person's face when he or she receives a present. The feeling of being able to make someone else happy and contented with a little action (or a little gift, for that matter) is simply overwhelming and truly delightful.

I've also noticed a changing trend in my personal mindset.

The me of 10 years ago would be satisfied with the latest toy or game gadget for Christmas but today, I'm more a fan of giving out smiles rather than receiving the latest technological gadget or the most expensive accessory.

I guess its a change we all face at some point in our lives were we feel that giving is much more important as compared to taking.

Interesting isn't it?

Well I managed to squeeze in a little time after my delivery rounds that day and decided to take a walk downtown, with Audrey strapped safely behind me of course.

The feeling, that atmosphere was really different that night as I recall now in retrospect. It was so significant that while I was having a little coffee break down at Starbucks that night, I penned down my thoughts.

Which went something like this;

That Feeling.

"

Title: "That Feeling"

Wrapper after Wrapper, bag after bag, its that time of the year again. To some, a hassle, to others, a joy.

And to a small other group, a significance.

You see smiles everyday but the smiles you see during this season are truly memorable. "Here, I made this for you", might not seem like much, but it can certainly light up one's day.

Nature finds substitutes well; while others on the other side of the world cope with snowflakes, we take out out umbrellas and hoodies.

A worthy substitute?

Nothing beats this feeling. The feeling of light drizzle against your skin, the feeling of having everything you need on your back, the feeling of unrivaled freedom.

With church bells chiming in the background to familiar Christmas melodies and the soft gentle wind blowing at your cheeks, one certainly feels and hopes that life is a dream and everyday should be as such.

As you settle down for a coffee, you stop and reminisce on the day long gone and the days soon to come. Surely nothing would be able to replace such a setting, will it?

Slowly, you take a sip of coffee. Its aroma pervades through your senses and your breath is coated with a deep flavor of roast.

Time seemingly stops as you gaze far but you stop, and started thinking again.

A soft Christmas tune plays in your head, reminding you of the occasion, such a celebrated even this is; minute by minute, the day approaches.

Santa will be proud of you today, as you are with yourself for joy and smiles are spread. A feeling unrivaled.

But wait, is everything done?

You glance around you and something serves as a reminder of an uncompleted task. Your focus shifts away and you start thinking about your family and friends.

What are they doing? Are they happy?

You sense the evident mood amongst the people around you and its hard not to get affected. Amidst casual conversations are hints of Christmas being distributed here and there.

This atmosphere is infectious, in a good way of course. It makes you want to stand up and proclaim, sing and dance, jump and scream.

Interestingly, you check your phone, take your camera out and snapped a couple of shots. This is the moment when you wished that life was like this everyday, every time.

With everyone happy, you wished that everyday was Christmas.

"Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

"

Over a slow cup of coffee, I penned the above down based on my mood, feelings and my observations around me at that time. Hope you guys enjoyed that little "narrative".

Its interesting what the season of Christmas means to each and everyone of us. So let me post this question to you readers out there;

"What does Christmas mean to you?"

Well for me, as I've mentioned, Christmas means being able to bring happiness to the people around me and seeing them contented and happy. Christmas also means making myself happy and positive and also an assurance that there is still hope and reason to smile at the end of the day.

Hope and a reason to Smile is what keeps this star shining.

Cliche stuff I know but I'm pretty sure the words "Christmas" and "Happiness" ain't exactly that far off for one encompasses the other and vice versa.

So yea, I really look forward to your responses and comments about the post and the question. Remember to check back for updates as the year 2009 looms upon us!

In the meantime, stay safe and happy and if you drink, don't drive.

And oh yea, from all of us here at metallic-stains, have a Happy and Brilliant Christmas!

Cya'll later.

"A very merry Christmas"
